'Tenses' are used  to express flow and time and time reference. Tenses are usually formed by using of specific forms of verbs, specifically in conjugation patterns. Basic tenses include the past, present, and future.

Simple present some rules to help you

  • Simple Present is used to express repeated actions, a routine.
  • Signal words for the Simple Present: 
    • always
    • every day
    • often
    • seldom
    • sometimes.
  • The infinitive of the verb is used to form the Simple Present.
  • In the 3rd person singular (he, she, it), es if the verb ends in a s, sh, and ch, th, z, or zh, including three others such as z, x, f and softer c
  • Use do/does + not + infinitive verb to form the negative sentences.
  • Use do/does + the infinitive verb in object questions, like Do you like watching movies?
  • Use the verb in the Simple Present in subject questions, like Who likes watching movies?

 

Simple Past Rules

  • Simple Past is used for actions completed in the past.
  • Signal words for the Simple Past are:
    • Yesterday
    • Last week- Last year
    • A month ago
    • In 2000
  • ‘ed’ is appended to the infinitive of regular verbs
  • If the regular verbs ends in -e, I only add d to the infinitive.
  • In case of the irregular verbs, form mentioned in the 2nd column of the table of the irregular verbs is used.

  • To make negative sentences did + not + infinitive of the verb is used.
    • I did not call my friends.
  • The contracted form for did + not is didn't .
  • For object questions, did + infinitive of the verb is used.
    • Did you call your friends yesterday?
  • For subject questions, verb is used to form in the Simple Past.
    • Who called you yesterday?
  • The verb be has two forms in the Simple Past, was were.
    • I                       was
    • You                 were
    • he, she, it         was
    • we, you, they   were
